Trade schools

Trade schools are schools imparting a specialized skill. They are good alternatives to conventional high schools. They are also called vocational schools, post secondary schools or even career schools. They involve subjects like cooking, arts, interior and fashion design , information technology, graphic and web designing, and not subjects dealing with liberal arts like sociology and history. Few trade schools also impart specialization in business and management subjects. It is very common to get quality education, however it is very difficult to get quality trade education. These schools are involved in providing training than education.

Trade schools can be classified on the basis of type of training, they provide -

  • Technical knowledge like IT, web designing and interior designing.
  • Non technical knowledge such as cooking, arts and crafts and music. Trade schools can be private schools or public schools. For many years, it was perceived that those who lack educational qualifications apply for courses in such trade schools. Such schools were always considered inferior to the educational institutions or universities. However, the scenario has changed today. Now trade schools have built there stand by consistently providing quality knowledge and training to its pupils. Trade schools generally have short duration courses extending to a maximum of three years. Such schools provide knowledge by mainly 2 means.They are-
  • On site training - This type of training is provided in the school premises, wherein full time classes and batches are involved. Teachers and professional in the specified fields are appointed for this purpose.
  • Distance learning or correspondence - This type of training involves studying through correspondence. Here, the study material is provided and the students have to study on their own. Correspondence is usually through internet or through postal services. It can be noted that the major difference between traditional technical schools and a trade school is that, traditional technical school teaches the science behind the profession or the job whereas the trade schools provides the skills needed to do the job successfully.     • However these schools suffer from several disadvantages too. The disadvantages of a trade school are:

  • Students miss the school and college environment while studying.
  • Limited knowledge.
  • Students can?t change their field of work easily.
  • Number of courses provided at trade schools is presently very limited.
  • Generally, lacks quality resources and tools to provide the right kind of education

    Even though, today trade schools have established themselves still they have never been able to compete the traditional educational schools and institutions. Trade schools are a great option for those, who have keen interest only in one particular field and are very biased about the same. The person, whose field of interests keep on changing should never opt for a long term trade course, as short term courses are also available.
