Definition of "inferior conjunction"

This phenomenon occurs when an inferior planet passes between the Earth and the Sun. It is usually impossible to observe the planet close to inferior conjunction, because it is hidden by the glare of the Sun. Occasionally though, the planet can be seen to transit across the Sun's disk.

See also superior conjunction.
