Definition of "superior conjunction"

A phenomenon which occurs when a planet passes behind the Sun as viewed from the Earth. This can happen to both inferior and superior planets, the only difference being that inferior planets, which are moving faster than the Earth, pass behind the Sun from west to east, whilst the slower superior planets pass from east to west.

See also inferior conjunction.
