Definition of "transit"

Not to be confused with a meridian transit, this is the passage of a body in front of another, larger body as viewed from a particular location (usually the Earth). For example, the passage of Mercury or Venus in front of the Sun, or the transit of one of its moons in front of Jupiter. The passage of the Moon in front of the Sun is a special case and is not called a transit, but a solar eclipse.
